Characteristics of a Plant Cell
- A plant cell is surrounded by a rigid cell wall.
- It has a definite form.
- It is usually larger in size.
- It cannot change its shape.
- It cannot change its position or move about.
- It has plastids.
- It has a large central vacuole.
- The nucleus is towards the periphery.
- The shape of the nucleus is elliptical.
- The number of mitochondria is comparatively fewer.
- Centrioles are absent.
- The spindle apparatus nuclear division is anastral.
- The organelle, Golgi apparatus has a number of distinct special units called dictyosomes.
- The plant cells cannot take part in phagocytosis.
- Lysosomes are rarely found in plant cells. Specialised vacuoles take over the function of lysosomes.
- Glyoxysomes may be present.
- Crystals of inorganic substances occur in cells.
- Reserve food material is starch and fat.
- Adjacent cells may be connected through plasmodesmata.
- Cytokinesis occurs by cell plate formation.

- There is no cell wall around an animal cell.
- A definite form is less common in the case of animal cells.
- The size of animal cells is usually small.
- An animal cell often changes its shape.
- An animal cell is capable of changing its position and moving about.
- The location of the nucleus is in the centre.
- Plastids are absent in them.
- An animal cell usually has many small vacuoles.
- The shape of the nucleus is usually round.
- The number of mitochondria is numerous.
- Centrioles are present in them.
- The spindle apparatus is amphiastral.
- Dictyosomes are absent.
- They are capable of ingesting materials via phagocytosis.
- Fully-functional lysosomes are there in animal cells.
- Glyoxysomes are absent.
- Crystals of inorganic materials are not commonly found in animal cells.
- Reserve food material is glycogen and fat.
- A number of cell junctions connect adjacent cells.
- Cytokinesis occurs by cleavage.
