Difference between Neo Darwinism and Neo Lamarckism
Neo-Darwinism and Neo-Lamarckism are two different evolutionary theories that have different explanations for how evolution occurs. Neo-Darwinism is an updated version of the original Darwinian theory, while Neo-Lamarckism is a modified version of Lamarck’s original theory of evolution.

Neo-Darwinism
- Based on natural selection: Neo-Darwinism emphasizes the role of natural selection in driving evolution. This means that traits that enhance an organism’s ability to survive and reproduce will be favoured over time, leading to changes in the gene pool of a population.
- Emphasis on genetic mutations: It emphasizes the role of genetic mutations in providing the raw material for natural selection to act upon. Mutations create genetic variation within a population, which can be subject to natural selection.
- Inheritance through genes: It emphasizes that the inheritance of traits is primarily through genes. The environment has little to no direct effect on the inheritance of traits.
Neo-Lamarckism
- Based on acquired characteristics: Neo-Lamarckism emphasizes the role of acquired characteristics in driving evolution. This means that an organism can pass on traits it acquires during its lifetime to its offspring.
- Emphasis on use and disuse: It emphasizes the role of use and disuse in driving evolution. This means that traits that an organism uses frequently will become more developed, while those that an organism does not use will become less developed over time.
- Inheritance through direct action: It emphasizes that the inheritance of traits is primarily through direct action on the germ cells. The environment can directly influence the inheritance of traits.
In summary, Neo-Darwinism emphasizes the role of natural selection and genetic mutations in driving evolution, while Neo-Lamarckism emphasizes the role of acquired characteristics and use and disuse in driving evolution. Neo-Darwinism emphasizes inheritance through genes, while Neo-Lamarckism emphasizes inheritance through direct action on the germ cells. However, Neo-Lamarckism is generally not supported by modern scientific evidence, while Neo-Darwinism remains a widely accepted theory of evolution.
